چکیده

duced. Mr. Walsham, he remembered, used ordinary rubber drainagetubes passed through the nose after septum operations. The tubes were perforated. The perforating was an advantage. Sir WILLIAM MILLIGAN agreed that they were excellent tubes, but it raised the question whether tubes were desirable at all. Mr. W. STUAET-LOW thought this question would make an excellent subject for a set discussion. Dr. MCKENZIE replied that the tubes were not intended for drainage ; they were for the patient to breathe through during the time the packing was in the nose. Pressure of the swelling caused rubber tubes to close. He thought anyone who had once tried his tubes for twenty-four hours after the operation would continue to use them.

Significantly Reducing Post-Tonsillectomy Haemorrhage Requiring Surgery by Suturing the Faucial Pillars: A Retrospective Analysis

BACKGROUND The tonsillectomy is one of the most frequently performed surgical procedures. Given the comparatively frequent postsurgical bleeding associated with this procedure, particular attention has been paid to reduction of the postoperative bleeding rate. In 2006, we introduced routine suturing of the faucial pillars at our clinic to reduce postoperative haemorrhage. METHODS Two groups f...

A clinical sign to predict difficult tracheal intubation: a prospective study.

It has been suggested that the size of the base of the tongue is an important factor determining the degree of difficulty of direct laryngoscopy. A relatively simple grading system which involves preoperative ability to visualize the faucial pillars, soft palate and base of uvula was designed as a means of predicting the degree of difficulty in laryngeal exposure. The system was evaluated in 21...

A comparison of Mallampati scoring, upper lip bite test and sternomental distance in predicting difficult intubation

Mallampati et al, proposed a grading system to anticipate difficult intubation, which considers visualization of faucial pillars, soft palate and base of uvula. 4 The upper lip bite test (ULBT) was proposed as a simple bed side technique by Khan et al, which involves the assessment of jaw subluxation and presence of buck teeth. 9 Savva et al, proposed sternomental distance (distance from the su...

Time-dose factors in radiotherapy: a review of the human data.

The values for alpha/beta (fractionation sensitivity, or recovery capacity) for early and late reactions in human normal tissues are consistent with results from experimental animals. For breast treatments direct analysis indicates that for early reactions alpha/beta is in the range 7 to 11 Gy, while for late effects it is in the range 2 to 4 Gy. Data on recovery kinetics in human tissues is li...

Palatine tonsillar metastasis from lung adenocarcinoma.

Tonsillar metastasis from lung cancer is an extremely rare event and is usually related to metastatic spread of the neoplastic disease to other organs with poor prognosis. We present the unusual case of a 71-year-old man who developed a huge metastasis to the left palatine tonsil from a lung adenocarcinoma. The tumor was exophytic with necrotic and hemorrhagic areas, occupying a large portion o...
